Mosquitoes are flying bugs found around the world. It is the female of the species that suck the blood of humans and animals.  The males feed on nectar from fruit.

You might know mosquitoes as bugs that like to come out in the summertime. You know - when you're outside gardening, the kids are out playing, you're enjoying a day by the pool - then Youch! A mosquito just bit you.

Mosquito Diseases

Mosquito have lead to the death of millions of people over the year millions of people over thousands of years and continuing to kill millions per year by the spread of infectious diseases. The most common diseases spread by the Mosquito are Yellow Fever, Malaria and Dengue Fever.  It is now believed that it is impossible for Mosquitoes to transmit HIV.

There are about 3,500 species of Mosquitoes.

Mosquito Bites

When the mosquito feeds on human blood the feeding site can be left with a red, inflamed, itchy bump. Sometimes it takes all will power not to scratch. The easiest most economical way to have relief is to apply a cold compress to the site for at least 10 minutes.  The compress can be as simple as a washcloth wet with cold water.

On occasion, the “bite” symptoms can be severe.  Taking an antihistamine can help. Seek medical attention if the site appears to be infected or bruises.

Mosquito Bite Prevention

The best deterrent for mosquitoes is Avon’s Skin So Soft. There is something in the smell that just keeps them away. There are however, several other over the counter sprays that will also work. These sprays contain DEET.
