Facts About Bugs!

Below is our list of bug facts we thought would be fun for kids and parents too.

  • Only 1% of all the insects in the world are harmful to people.
  • Out of all the animals in the world, 80% are insects.
  • Spiders are not insects they are arachnids.
  • Arachnids have eight legs and two body pieces and there are a lot of species of arachnids.
  • Cockroaches can live without their head for weeks!
  • Honey bees have to travel up to 50,000 miles to get enough pollen to produce a cup of honey.
  • Female crickets don’t chirp only male crickets do and some crickets can jump up to three feet.
  • Beetles can adapt to many situations which is why there are more kinds of beetles than plants in the world. Beetles they say are “resistant to extinction”.
  • Lady bugs are not always red with black spots; they can be yellow, orange and even brown with white spots.
  • Tapeworms can grow up to 30 feet inside the body of an animal. • Flies can travel many miles a day, but like to stay close to where they were hatched.
  • Silkworm cocoons are the primary source of silk.

We think of bugs and insects as being the same, they are all creepy crawly critters that annoy us and sometimes scare us, but bugs are actually a type of insect and they have distinct differences.

Insects

  • Insects have three distinct body parts: head, abdomen, and thorax.
  • Insects have six legs.
  • Insects have wings.
  • Insects go through four stages of life.

Bugs

  • Bugs have a beak-like mouth.
  • Bugs have a different wing structure than insects.
  • Bugs only go through three stages of life.
