Itchy, Scratchy Fleas

Fleas are wingless parasitic insects that hop or jump. We most often think of fleas as being on dogs and cats. Fleas can be very hard to get rid of.

The mouthparts of fleas are used for the piercing skin from animals and humans. Fleas are very small, smaller than a grain of rice. They are black and can be easily seen. They have long legs used for jumping. They are able to jump both vertically and horizontally over 12 inches.

Flea Life Cycle

Fleas go through the three stages of life. They are larva, pupa and adult. After feeding, the female flea lays approximately 20 eggs which may or may not say on the host. In about two days to two weeks the eggs will hatch.Within two weeks of hatching, the flea is considered an adult and can reproduce. The adult flea can live for one month to one year with only one feeding.

Flea Species

There are several different species of fleas. These include Cat flea, Dog flea, Rat and Human flea.

Flea Bites

Fleas love warm blooded hosts such as dogs, cats, humans, chickens, rabbits, squirrels, and rats. Flea bites are an annoyance and  cause itching which can cause skin damage by scratching. Fleas can be more than just an annoyance. They can cause a severe allergic reaction. The bites are red and raised. Each bite can remain inflamed and itchy for a few days to a few weeks. Severe flea bites are best treated with antihistamines or anti-itch creams. A cold compress can ease the itching for less severe bites.

Flea Removal

Once your dog or cat brings them in house, the whole house can become infested. One of the best strategies for flea removal is treating the animal and the house at the same time, attacking the infestation from all angles. A pesticide can be given to your pet that will stop the reproduction of fleas. Typically this insecticide will last for one month and finish off any flea that bites the host within approximately 24 hours.Follow your vets or manufacturers instructions for use.

Applying flea control powders or spray to carpets, furniture and just about anywhere your pet spends time. Be sure to vacuum all areas daily, since the larvae need at least 50 percent humidity to survive, use a dehumidifier.
